Sanibel Island is a beautiful barrier island just off the coast of southwest Florida, near Fort Myers. It is located in Lee County and was incorporated in 1974. The ride to Southwest Florida International Airport can take from 45 minutes to over an hour depending on the time of year. The drive is an easy one though, as there are two new flyovers that make eliminate the time wasting traffic snarls of the past. One is at the intersection of Gladiolus Road and Summerlin. The other flies over the busy intersection at Summerlin and San Carlos Blvd. There is toll of $6.00 to cross over the new Causeway onto what for many, is paradise.

This little piece of paradise is roughly 12 miles long and about 4 miles wide at its widest point. Sanibel is world renound for it's fabulous shelling beaches, and I walked every square inch of them collecting shells as a child. The main body of land lies east/west, and acts as a scoop that causes shells to collect on its beaches. There is also great shelling on the beaches of Captiva, North Captiva, and Cayo Costa.

The population is around 5600 people, which has grown from less than 300 permanen residents back in the late 50's and early 60's. The population can quadruple during the winter during the prime tourist season. With an average temperature of around 75 degrees, and some of the world's best flats angling, it is easy to see why so many folks flock from the north to escape the cold weather.

A wildlife refuge in and of itself, some 60% of the land area is protected wildlife preserves. The most noted preserve is the "Ding Darling Sanctuary".

There are some 26 miles of bike trails and 17 miles of beautiful beaches.
