HURRICANE REPORT #4 - 8/24/04

Help With Insurance Claims

florida fishing reports

A friend of mine, David Kinchen, who lives in Miami, and has serious hurricane experience, sent along what I hope will be helpful to some of you who sustained serious damage from Charley, and find yourselves dealing with insurance claims. Below are some clips from his emails to me about his friend Juan Escar, who is an independent insurance adjuster.

Hi Butch,

Thrilled to hear you came out without a scratch. I was afraid I'd have to send your trailer and my boat over to get you back on the water.... Anyhow, our thoughts are with you and your neighbors, and we pray business picks up as quickly as possible so you can get back to what you love.

In a similar vein, a long-time friend and fishing buddy of mine is an independent insurance adjuster. He's headed over your way with a couple of his colleagues tomorrow, to see what he can do to help. If you know someone who has had damage and is in the process of trying to sort out a claim with their insurance company, I would hightly recommend they speak to him. He typically handles the entire process on behalf of the insured, and often resolves claims quicker, more thoroughly, and ends up with a more equitable settlement than they would be able to reach on their own.

There are few people I would go out of my way to recommend, but I can tell you if it were me facing what the people over there are facing, I would want him on my side. He is honest, expremebly humane, exceptionally hard working, and knows his business. His name is Juan Escar, and he can be reached at 786-306-4261. I'd also be happy to relay messages to him if someone doesn't have the means to contact him.

Warm regards,

David

I think typically it's a percentage of the claim (10% is what I understand is the number from when he handled my brother in law's claim). On the upside, to my knowledge he always gets significantly more than his percentage compared to what the homeowner would've gotten and he's 100% legit. It's just that people overlook a lot, particularly when they're under duress. I'm sure he'd appreciate the note, and again, I wouldn't have passed it along if I didn't think it was a better option to handling it on your own. I once had a big claim from a burglary (probably 8 years ago) and just for fun (his, not mine, because I was stubborn and handled the claim myself) we sat down and he pointed out so many things I forgot, didn't think of or undervalued. Thank God I've never had need for him since, but you can bet I would use him without thought! Anyhow, I'll check on the percentage and get back to you. D

Quick update. Juan's in Ft. Meyers now and will remain for at least a week or so in the short term. He's also rented an apartment in Ft. Meyers for 7 months and anticipates being over there regularly for the foreseeable future so feel free to pass along his info to whomever you think could use his help. When you do go back home, please let me know. I'm pretty certain he'll be up for booking a trip with you. He's as incurable a fisherman as I.

Take care, David
