I got out yesterday, the 23rd, to assess the damage in the Sound from hurricane Charley. The Sound looks in places like it took a nuke. Most all the mangrove islands and keys are stripped of much of their mangrove leaves, and all you see is the brown of the exposed limbs and root systems. It will take from 6 to 8 years for the mangroves to recover and return to normal. I took around 150 pictures, beginning at the ramp, going up the river to Miserable Mile, up the east side of the Sound to about Josslyn Island, across to North Captiva, and back down the west side, taking in the new pass, South Seas Plantation, back down the belly of Sanibel, and back home. The picture tour took about four hours. The damage to the islands is extensive, but already people are hard at work putting things back together, again.
