Steve is a builder of quality, high-end luxury homes who's been working too, too hard for the past decade. He was referred to me by Anglers Image, a fly fishing shop and mail order catalogue based in Sarasota. Steve is quite a skilled angler who has taken that last step into fly fishing recently. Although relatively new to the sport, he's progressing nicely, and really wanted to take a snook on fly.
I brought the usual cache of spinning tackle and we caught shiners both for fishing and to use as chum. Although Steve fished hard with the long rod that morning, the lack of practice took its toll on his right shoulder, and ever so often he would switch to the live bait rig. Even though he spent much of the morning fly fishing, and tried many different flies, he only had three takes on fly, and managed to hook and land the last one. But in between fly sessions, he still managed to catch about 60 snook on spinning gear!
Checking back through my records, the previous best single angler catch was 38 snook, and that's a lot of snook. Steve's 60 snook morning record may stand for a long time, and we may have to call Steve the Grand Wizard of Beach Snook.
