I had one trip scheduled for this week, with Colleen Murphy and her girlfriend Crisan Herned, down from Annapolis, Maryland. With cold front passing on average about every five days I watched the weather closely as our date approached. A front passed, and brought some very cold weather for southwest Florida. The forecast for Thursday was for a low around 37! I called Colleen Thursday evening, and gave her the news. We had a very poor tide, cold, and a north wind, but the girls mainly wanted to learn how to fish from a kayak. Colleen said we were a go.
I got up and did my usual routine, and headed to Castaways. There I spend the half hour before the girls arrived to get the first two boats ready to put into the water. I had just finished with them when Colleen and Chris pulled in, and I couldn't believe my eyes when they walked up to me wearing only shorts, blouse, and flip-flops!! Well, I think Colleen had on a light jacket, but........... They couldn't believe it had gotten so cold in Florida.
I told the girls that the tide was so drastically low, we'd have to get out and wade and pull our kayaks across a dry flat just to get to the fish. That was the deal breaker, as Colleen asked, “Butch, can we forget today and reschedule later in the spring?” I agreed it was a good call, as I knew there would be few fish caught on a cold, blowing, low tide day like we had drawn.
I decided that since we were there, and I'd already spent my money on the $9 bridge toll and supplies, I might as well give the girls a casting clinic, since long, accurate casts are essential to success in our brand of shallow water fishing. Colleen was all for that, but Cris wanted to go back to the car and try to get warm.
We spent a half hour or more on the clinic, which Colleen enjoyed, and found very worthwhile. We chatted for a while afterward, and agreed to try to pick a good tide day in the spring, or later in the year. I'm looking forward to their return, and was glad we at least got to meet.
