FLORIDA KAYAK FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 1/28/12

My one trip this week was with an old friend Pete Karas, whom I hadn't seen since around 2006. Pete hales from Peninsula, Ohio. He's a fun guy, and great to fish with. We met at the Circle K at Summerlin and John Morris Roads, and he rode out to the islands with me.

We were blessed with a beautiful day that was breezy, with an anticipated high of 84, and a radical low tide. We would have very little water to fish for most of our trip. But, that's great pothole fishing.

We made the run to our first spot and got situated. It wasn't long before we were catching fish. Pete was catching nice trout, and I'd gotten into some redfish just a cast away. We stayed with that, and when the bite slowed we had several nice trout, a couple of keeper redfish, and some flounder. I wanted to find a hot trout bite, as we were limited out on reds.

We moved about a quarter mile away, and stopped on a larger hole that has been good to me this winter. We were immediately on trout, and Pete really had a hot rod and put on a show. For nearly two hours, we were both catching trout on nearly every cast. Before we were done we had our two limits of speckled trout and redfish, and our stringers were pretty full.

The tide was about done by then, but we spend the last of it trying to find another redfish bite. It was not to happen, and we headed in with a great day under our belts. Back at the ramp, one of the Castaways residents saw us with our fish, and was quite impressed. He came out and talked to us about the fish, and eventually asked if he could buy some. That's the first time in my guiding career someone ever asked me if they could buy some of our catch.

Video! A montage of my trip with Pete Karas on 1-25-12!

It was great to see Pete, again. And, he very much enjoyed the Native Ultimates, and the fishing comfort they offered. He vowed to be back.
