There are four trips to tell you about this week. There were several others, but they were out of my reporting area, and not relevant to this report.
Sunday was the first of three more trips with my good friend Mike Schwartz. It was a beautiful day with light southwest breezes and temps in the 80's. Mike was gracious enough to allow my friend Dorothy Brewer to join us, since it was just he and me. She is new to the fishing thing, in particular flats fishing. We gathered bait at Chino Island and were off.
We hit three areas that day. All were pretty good. Through the course of the day Mike and Dorothy caught half dozen redfish, and half dozen trout to 5 pounds. We got into the snook well at the last stop, and lost two big fish there. But they still managed to boat a good dozen snook to 25 inches. The most fun was watching Dorothy try to land her fish. She was a hoot.
Monday, Mike and I were back out there, but I had arranged for Mike to share the next two days with my good friend Russ Hubbard. It seemed like a natural pairing; my two best anglers, Mike and Russ. I new we'd have fun. And, we did!
After catching bait at Chino again, we headed outside to check the beaches for snook. We only found a couple of snook, but we did find a real big trout bonanza. We caught a dozen or so trout to 4 pounds, and virtually every one had several following it up and chasing the bait. We could have stayed there and caught them all morning, I believe, but opted to continue our search. Failing to find good snook populations on the beaches, we headed back inside, and managed 19 nice snook to 5 pounds. We had a good day before it was all over.
Tuesday, it was Mike and Russ again, and after catching bait, we decided to go and have fun with the trout. Russ wanted some meat to take home, and this was too easy. So, back at the same piece of beach we caught a good two dozen big trout before we decided to turn our attention to snook. Once we were back inside we found at least a dozen of the linesiders to 5 pounds. It was a fun day, and I believe a new fishing friendship was born between Mike and Russ.
Wednesday was my second trip with Bruce Miller, of Cape Coral. This was our second instructional trip. Bruce is a great guy, and fun to be out with. And, since our first trip, he's bought a boat more suitable to our type of fishing.
Anyway, it was time to teach him about summer pattern fishing, which means beaches. So after catching bait, we headed out to show him the beach snooking areas. The snook weren't wanting to play yet, so we headed up to the trout hole on the beach. There Bruce had a ball catching big trout after big trout, and boated 25 to 30 of the mighty sea trout. Once he'd had his fill of that, I took him inside and showed him some of the fine points of snook fishing inside. Bruce caught 9 snook to 31 inches, including 3 keepers. It was a great day.
As you can see, the fishing is pretty darned good. I believe it will continue to be good for the foreseeable future, but will be out of the area next week. I have one trip in the Sound, which I will report on.
