Fishing Report for Week Ending 11/17/96

by

Capt. Butch Rickey

The week of November 11 through 17 was a horrible weather week. We had the first real winter cold front come rumbling into town, and it brought lots of wind and bad weather with it. I had three weather cancellations for the week, but did manage to get out with Brent and Barbara Russell of Stowe, Vermont, on Thursday. We had northeast winds at 30 MPH as high pressure built in behind the passing front, but Brent and Barb thought it was wonderful.

We fished Pine Island Sound. The forecasted low tide was a -0.3 at 10:40 am, but the strong north wind had absolutely emptied the sound like someone had pulled the drain plug. We must have had at least a -1.0. I mean there was no water anywhere, but my trusty ProCat got me across the nearly dry barrier bar and into the mere inches of water on the flats. I was the only boat out there. I didn't see another boat until later in the day.

We poled from pothole to pothole. As a matter of fact, the first hole we fished was a hole that I had never fished that was just a few yards from one of my regular low tide spots. It was a small, unassuming hole, probably not more that 20 feet across, but man, was it loaded. We caught lots of reds, two snook, trout, flounder, and 2 big jacks out of that hole. Brent couldn't believe the action. After the bite stopped in that hole it seemed like there were big trout everywhere we went. We couldn't get away from them, and we kept leaving the trout biting in a search for reds and snook. Even so, we finished a day when no one else even braved the weather with 13 redfish, 2 snook, 27 trout, a flounder, and 2 jacks; a total of 44 fish.

Even the bad days can be great!
