Well, the weather actually let me get a couple of trips in this week. The winds remained from northerly directions for most of the week. I figured that and the copious amounts of fresh water that were dumping into the waterways would make fishing tough, and it was. We did manage to catch some nice fish, though.
Gordon Brinker, of Michigan, and his pals Bill and Lee were first up. The wind was 15 to 20 out of the northeast and the moon was full! Man! We chummed up plenty of bait near York Island, thankfully, and were soon off fishing.
Although it was expectedly a tough day for snook and redfish, the trout were eager to eat. By day's end Gordon, Bill, and Lee had boated 1 redfish, 4 snook, an 18 inch flounder, 3 jacks, and 30 or more beautiful speckled trout. We had a great time.
My friends Jeff Lane and Peggy Besse were in town for the holidays and were anxious to get back to Pine Island Sound for some fishing. I took them to the Sound for the first time this time last year, and we had a great day. Jeff and Peg fell in love with it.
Well, the wind was still up out of the north, and the barometer was extremely high. That's not a good recipe for good fishing, and it was tough. But we kept at it, and Jeff and Peggy caught and released 8 or so beautiful snook to 8 pounds, along with about a half dozen trout, and a jack. Not the numbers we're accustomed to most of the time, but they were quality fish, and we all had a great time.
Well, Christmas week is upon us. I could have worked all week if I had wanted to, but am only going to run 2 trips. I've got a full week following, though. Talk about strange weather; it looks like Christmas week is going to be unseasonably warm. Go figure.
I want to wish all of you who have fished with me in the past and helped me to build my guide business, a very Merry Christmas, and a great and prosperous 1998. I hope that I'll be seeing many of you again this year, and am looking forward to the renewing of old friendships.
Tight Lines and full stockings.
