Fishing Report for Week Ending 12/22/96

Monday of this week dawned with the promise of 80 degree weather and light winds. John Emrich and his brother Sam were down from Charleston, SC, and were ready for some fishin'.
We got plenty of bait around the Sanibel Causeway, and headed up the Sound for some low tide pothole fishing. Word at the docks was that nothing much was being caught, but we had a pretty good day. John caught 19 trout, 3 snook, 3 redfish, and 2 flounder. Sam caught 21 trout, 2 snook, 4 redfish, and 2 flounder, for a total of 7 reds, 5 snook, 40 trout, and 4 flounder.
Bad weather later in the week caused some cancellations. But, Sunday, I was back on the water with Ed Newell, of Humarock, MA. We had a northeast wind at 15 knots, and the high was to be around 73. The tide was extremely low and just right for the potholes. I polled the boat up to one of my favorite low tide spots armed only with shrimp and artificial baits. The bad weather had blown all the shiners into deep water offshore, apparently. There were none to be found anywhere.
I didn't know quite what to expect armed only with shrimp, but to my surprise and delight the hole was slam full of hungry redfish. Ed caught 47 reds out of that first hole, and had a blast doing it. We hit a couple of other holes before the day was out and went to fishing jigs at the last hole. We wound up with a total of 51 redfish, and 1 flounder.
Well, Christmas is right around the corner now, but the weatherman is forecasting unseasonably warm weather for the foreseeable future. Ain't it great?
