Fishing Report for Week Ending 2/22/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

This week brought lots of winter type winds, but temperatures were unseasonably high. Dave Hessinglow, a TWA mechanic from Richmond, MO, booked me for two days, and brought along his kids, Ryan and Chris. The first day we gathered our bait around the first span of the Sanibel Causeway without much adoo, and were off to the fishing grounds. Dave and the kids missed lots of hits, and broke off their share of snook, but still landed 2 redfish, 5 snook (7 lost), 12 beautiful trout up to 23", and a couple of ladyfish.

The next morning Dave and crew were right back to try it again. After looking on the flats for bait with no sucess, we made one throw at the Causeway again, and were ready to fish. This day Dave lost several big snook, but the boys landed 6 or 7 to 24", 6 speckled trout to 18", and a big flounder.

Because we haven't really had any cold weather so far this year, the snook are out on the flats in good numbers and size, instead of hiding up the rivers and creeks.
