Fishing Report for Week Ending 2/9/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

Here we are in the first week of February in Florida. Who can believe it's in the low 80's, and just gorgeous. The fantastic weather held for the whole week, and we got in some great fishing.

First up were Loring Spencer and her boyfriend Rob Vicks, of Crested Butte, Colorodo. Loring had booked a fly fishing trip for Rob, who is an avid fly fisherman. I had suggested to Loring when she booked the trip, that we catch shiners and fish her with the live bait and let Rob flyfish. That way we would know if Loring was catching that there were fish for Rob to catch on the fly. It would also give me bait to use as chum, to try to get a bite going for Rob, if necessary.

Once we reached the fishing grounds and set up on the first hole, Rob told me he'd been fly fishing for seven years, and that he figured he'd catch a fish in another fourteen years. Loring ragged him about never catching any fish. I kept Loring busy with an assembly line technique which she liked very much. I'd cast a bait into the hole. While she was reeling in her fish, I'd get another rig baited and ready and cast it into the hole. Once she got her fish to the boat, we'd trade rods, usually just in time for her to strike another fish and reel it in. She told Rob, "This is the way to fish!"

Rob faithfully waved the long rod for most of the day. He tried just about every type of fly I had in the box, tried different stripping techniques, and even got out of the boat and waded to the edge of the holes to cast. Although Rob was an accomplished flycaster, he had never had to cast for distance, and was not getting the fly very far into the holes. I though for sure he would hook up once he was out of the boat, but it was not to be. Finally, he succumbed, and asked for a spinning rig with a bait saying, "I've got to catch a fish before the day is over."

Rob and Loring ended the day with 2 redfish, 2 snook, and over 2 dozen trout, a mangrove snapper, a small gag grouper, and 2 jacks. Rob is a fun guy with a great sense of humor, and Loring is a beautiful girl, with a beautiful smile, and is quite a good fisherman. They were a lot of fun, and I hope I'll see them again.

This report is still under construction and will be finished soon!
