This week started out on a low note. I was once again guiding my #1 fishing buddy, Kevin Grover, along with Tom Murphy of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and his boss, Denis. I told him the day before that this day would be a stinker. At this point, I'd had Kevin out about 8 times, and we'd slamed `em every time, but this time I knew we had too much against us. It was a Sunday, we had a terrible, flat tide, we had a north wind at 20+ knots, and if that wasn't enough, the water was full of trash. I just knew it was going to be a bad day.
Bad, it was! We only managed 1 redfish, 1 flounder, and 10 trout to 19". But Kevin is a hell of a good sport, and a damned good fisherman, and took it all in stride. He said, "We had that one coming!"
A couple days later I had Tom and Janet Beck, of Mansfield, Ohio, along with their good friends Galin and Elaine. We were still being plagued by high winds and a high barometer, but these guys weren't about to be denied a good time.
There were lots of misses on the snook, but the Beck crew managed 1 redfish, 6 snook to 27", and 30+ speckled trout. They had a good time, and were a lot of fun.
After a day off, I was back out with Rick Grossman and Walt King of Riverview. I'd had Rick out about a year earlier, and we had a great trip. I hoped this would be a repeat for them.
The weather had settled some, we were in the 80's, and there was plenty of bait. By morning's end Rick and Walt had put 11 redfish to 26', 9 snook to 25", and 2 big trout to 22" in the boat. It was a great morning.
The next morning Steve Mackey and his family, Nicole, Kent, and Lance (I believe that's right), of Stafford, VA, were ready to take on the snook. The Mackeys did lots of battle with lots of fish, but were plagued with breakoffs and spit hooks. They only landed 3 redfish and 6 snook to 27", but they had lots of action and lots of fun. It was their first time at this kind of fishing, and they'll land many more fish with some experience.
By the next morning a front had passed, and the wind was around to the northwest at 25 knots, and we were clouded over. John Konnert and his young son Tim, of Reston, VA, were in town to try their hand at our brand of fishing. With the wind, the front, a full moon, and the weekend, I figured it would be tough. It was, but John and Tim bagged 3 redfish, 4 snook to 24", and 6 nice trout to 21", and lost a monster snook in Blind Pass.
