Fishing Report for Week Ending 4/12/97

April is shaping up to be a strange weather month. After having great weather for most of the winter season, now in April, we're having winter type fronts push through. I think the odd weather is sending the fish, especially snook, strange signals, too.
We did have a great weather day for the Bonita Bay Club. My cousin and fellow guide, Capt. Terry Middleton does several trips a year for the Club involving several guide boats. I have the largest flats boat, so I usually get stuck with the groups of 3 or 4. It's really tough to fish 4 people in the backcountry.
On this day I had Jay Elliott, Dick Steils, and Ray (didn't get his last name), who were a great bunch of guys. We were on fish for most of the day, but the boys missed lots of hits, and lost a lot of fish. They did manage to boat 1 redfish, 1 trout, 1 jack, and 7 snook. Back at the docks I commented to the guys that their buddies in the other boats had given them a fishing lesson. Their response was, "Yea, and they've spent about $4,500 a piece more than we have learning how to do this, too!"
A few days later, with a 20 knot southwest wind blowing under a blanket of clouds, golf pro Jeff Sheets and his good friend Charles of Terre Haute, IN, were out to try their luck.
Jeff soon realized that a strong wind made fishing as tough as golfing. They persisted and had a good time in spite of the weather, and caught 1 nice redfish, a trout, and half dozen snook. They kept a red, 2 snook of 26", and the trout.
There won't be a report for the week ending April 19, as bad weather caused lots of cancellations.
