Fishing Report for Week Ending 4/26/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

So far, seems like April has been a pretty dreary month, and this week was no exception.

My friend John Laszlo and his life-long best friend Bill Rebol, from Chesaning, MI, were eager to try their luck, and as luck would have it they drew the best weather day of the week. The wind was only 15 out of the southwest under a 100% cloud cover.

Bill had never done our brand of fishing before, and after 12 to 15 redfish to 28 inches, 4 snook to 27", and 3 trout to 20 inches, was in awe of the whole thing. He just couldn't believe how hard our saltwater fish pull. Laz and Bill took home 3 reds, a snook and a trout for the dinner table.

The next trip was with Pat Yebba, of Weymouth, Mass, and his brother-in-law, George. It was an absolutely horrible morning, with a 25/30 knot southwest wind, and total cloud cover. There was only one other guideboat at the ramp. In fact, I only saw one boat the whole day. It turned out to be a lesson in when to go fishing. I like a southwest wind. After all, when the wind is west, fishing is best, and when the wind is south fish open their mouth, right. So, you know southwest has got to be good. But 30 knots and rain left us by ourselves.

Everyone else missed some fantastic fishing! We killed `em! Even with lots of breakoffs in the mangroves Pat and George managed 4 redfish and over a dozen snook. That included 2 reds of 30 inches, a 35 inch, 15 pound snook, a 33 inch snook of 12 pounds, and several 28 inch snook. The odd thing was that we caught almost all of those fish out of one area. I guess that a $95 tip is proof that Pat and George had a great time.

Brian Whitesell and John O'Malia, from Indianapolis, IN, has a similar day on a busy Saturday with poor tides and a 20 knot east wind. With everything against us we got on the fish, and Brian and John caught 5 redfish to 30 inches, a around 12 snook to 29 inches. They took 3 reds and 3 snook home to Indy.

I guess the lesson to be learned this week is that even when all the factors are against you, if you get out there and work at it, the rewards can be great.
