Fishing Report for Week Ending 4/5/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

The week started out with Vic Hanson, of Bonita Springs, who I'd had to cancel the week before. Vick wanted to learn about fishing the local waters, and was surprised that I would be willing to teach him. We had a beautiful day with calm winds and a high of 88, but another front was on the way.

We fished a lot of spots that day, teaching as we went. When we were done Vic, and his buddies Tom Sr. and Tom Jr. had caught 3 redfish, 2 trout to 24", a small grouper, a couple of jacks, and 12 snook to 27". They also lost 3 snook.

The next morning Noel Moore, his son Noel Jr., and I were greeted by a roaring northwest wind. The front had passed. It was a tough day of hard fishing. The father-son team of Noels caught 4 snook, lost 2, 1 trout, and a jack. I hope they get better weather next time around.

After some time off, the front was gone and the wind was around to the east. Perfect conditions to find out if the snook were ganging up on the beach early. My party was Jeff Telecky and his children, of Buffalo, New York (See Angler of the Month for April). We were all delighted to find lots of snook on the beach. The Teleckys caught 30+ snook to 28", a 19" redfish, and a mackeral.

The last trip of the week was with Jack George, his 8 year old sno Kevin, 10 year old son Craig, and 15 year old son Chris, from Brandon, Florida. It's tough to fish four anglers unless they're really experienced. Kevin and Craig had a tough time trying to keep a snook on the end of their line, but that's something practice and experience will cure. Poor Dad didn't get to fish much at all, but the Georges managed to catch 2 redfish, a 23" trout, and 8 snook up to 27". Lots of fish got away to fight another day!

If the weather will allow us to fish outside, we should be in for some dynamic snook fishing this month, as well as an early Tarpon season.
