Fishing Report for Week Ending 5/17/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

First up for snook this week was my old friend and long time customer Mike Straughn, from Naperville, Illinois. It was a cloudy, cool day, with a pretty good breeze out of the southeast. There were pretty good swells on the beach from the weather out in the gulf. We fished the beach for about an hour, and Mike proclaimed that if I didn't get him in calm water quickly, he would be very sick. We left the snook biting again, and went to fish inside.

We still managed to have a great morning and Mike caught some nice snook. His total was 2 redfish and 16 snook to 28 inches. There were 8 keepers in the lot.

The next day the weather had deteriorated, and the wind was out of the northwest. That made getting to the snook on the outside impossible, and turned the fish off in general. But John Gregory and his friends Clint, Don, and Dick, of Tolland, Connecticut, were game to give it a try. The boys managed to boat 6 snook to 29 inches, and a 19 inch trout.

The following day, I was stood up at the ramp by Jim Lundin, of Schaumburg, Illinois. He had booked me on short notice, and I didn't have a deposit. He didn't even have the courtesy to call and cancel. It just amazes me that people can be so thoughtless. Any of you guides that might be reading this would do well to put him on your black list.

The last trip of the week was with the production crew from "Great Lakes Outdoors", which does the TV show of the same name on TNT. They're out of Lapeer, Michigan. We had a crew of 5, and a camera boat to do the long shots. I tried to give everyone a chance to fish, but with that many people, and trying to shoot video, there wasn't much time for the usual instruction. Still, they managed to get a redfish and more than 20 snook in the boat. Everyone had a great time doing the shoot. I believe it's supposed to air sometime in June.
