Fishing Report for Week Ending 5/3/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

The coming of May means summertime! It also signals the movement of snook out of the backcountry to their spawning grounds on the beaches and in the passes. Although I've already had some good days of beach snooking, it hasn't been reliable.

My friend Matt Petty and his son Adam, from Mansfield, Ohio, got to fish the beach early. The action isn't intense like it will be in a few weeks, but young eight yearold Adam had lots of misses and broken lines. Throughout the morning Matt and Adam caught 3 snook up to 28", 10 trout up to 24", and Matt caught his biggest fish ever, a 31" redfish. He and dad were both thrilled with that fish!

Later, Bill Drzymalla, of Grapevine, Texas, and recently retired from the Boy Scouts of America, had a great day on the water. He caught 6 redfish up to 32", 4 trout, and 7 snook to 29". Bill said he's been on lots of guide trips all over, and that this was the biggest snook he'd ever caught. Possibly, the biggest red, also.

As we move on into May, beach snooking should really start to heat up! Find you a piece of gulf coast beach from Anna Maria Island to the Ten Thousand Islands with some trees, groins, or rocks along the shore, and you'll surely find lots of snook. Remember, they'll be right up tight to the beach and cover.
