Fishing Report for Week Ending 7/26/97

by Capt. Butch Rickey

This continues to be a weird year. Everything is happening early. We had no winter, and we had eighty degree weather in January. Very early. The snook showed up on the beach for their annual spawn in April instead of May. Early! The redfish which usually show up in late August in advance of their spawn have shown up at least a month early. The snook, which are usually on the beach until late September, disappeared two weeks ago. Very early. For the past week we've been in a reverse weather pattern, with morning winds coming out of the west, causing early AM thunderstorms instead of our usual late afternoon pattern. Early. What's up? Is it el nino? I don't know, but the early morning storms caused Roy and Bunny Hobbs of Kissimmee, to miss the best of the early morning high tide for a couple of days. We had to run from storms and heavy rains several times the first day, but still managed to catch around 8 snook a couple of trout, a couple of big mangrove snappers, and a jack. Roy missed several opportunities to boat redfish. I got on a school in the same area I mentioned last week, and Roy had several hookups on a gold spoon with a barbless hook, but just couldn't resist giving them some slack line. Can't do that when you're fishing barbless. Roy claims he's never been any good at fishing with a spoon.

Remember, once the shallow water flats heat up under the summer sun, the fish take a siesta. If you've got a Florida fishing trip planned this summer, my advice is, "Do it early."
