Unfortunately, not a lot to talk about this week. It was a week of poor tides and 3 major computor problems....hard disk failures. I wasn't on the water but one day, and as I predicted, it was a tough one. My guest was Dr. Richard Georgiades, of Sarasota, and his cousin Robert Scellato, of Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. G has had Robert out on a number of guide trips and has yet to catch a fish. It was my mission to try to break this spell of bad luck.
We were greeted with thunderstorms coming onshore as the sun rose. Lightning sure is bright in the early morning darkness. It was raining in almost every direction, but by the time I had bait caught it looked to be clearing up.
I had wanted to get on the water early enough to catch some of the last of the high tide, but we didn't quite make it. I figured the fish would have full bellies after eating all during the early AM incoming tide, and that proved to be the case. We only managed two snook on the bars before they uncovered.
I ran up to the Demre Key area looking to find reds on the flats there, and did. They were spooky and not at all interested in eating anything. We did catch a dozen or so trout while fishing some potholes for reds, and missed a couple of great topwater strikes by what appeared to be large snook. Finally, Robert hooked a great fish that took off and made the Shimano Sustain 2000 sing. After several nice runs Robert finally subdued a big, broad-shouldered redfish of just over 27 inches. His spell was broken. I discovered Robert had brought a stalk of bananas on the boat and put them in the cooler. I explained to him that some superstitious guides believe that a banana in the boat is a curse on the fishing. I guess we dispelled that myth!
We most surely would have caught more reds but we were forced to run from storms on several ocassions. I spotted a school of feeding fish while making such a run, and stopped to catch what I hoped would be reds. The school turned out to be big jacks, which will push water almost like reds do. Dr. G and Robert were instantly hooked up on shiners and landed a couple of big jacks. Oddly, they wouldn't hit a spoon I was offering.
The coming week is offering up some real nice tides, and the prospect of some cooler, dryer weather. That combo should make for some great fishing this week.
