Although I had to spend the first three days of the week in Kissimmee on business, and Thursday was spent back at Smith Marine putting some finishing touches on the boat, fishing was great the last part of the week.
Friday, I had a single angler who wants to remain anonymous, but the fish will remember him! He caught and released 16 redfish to 29 inches, 7 snook to 25 inches, an 18 inch trout, and 5 jacks. It was a completely overcast and comfortable day on the water.
Saturday, I had a trip with Tom Davanaugh and Russ Hubbard, and their friends Rick and Jody. I hired my good friend and guide Capt. Mark Bess to supply the second boat. The plan was to catch bait together, then fish the same area I had fished the day before. We would stay in radio contact, and call each other if we really got on fish.
We stopped near Chino Island for bait, and while Mark and I tended to that Tom, Russ, Rick, and Jody caught jack, ladyfish, and small trout on practically every cast with gold and silver spoons. They were popping everywhere. Bait was a little slow coming, but once it came there was plenty of big, beautiful bait. Soon we were off to the fishing grounds.
Mark and I staked out positions about a quarter mile apart. The cover I had caught so many fish on the day before wasn't yet holding fish. I tried to contact Mark to see if he was on fish, but his radio wasn't transmitting properly. He could hear me, but we couldn't hear him. I left and went to another area about a mile away. We didn't see Mark again until we got back to the dock.
Back in port the boys compared notes, and everyone had had a great time. Tom and Russ caught 7 reds to 25 inches, 8 snook to 26 inches, and a snapper. Rick and Jody on Mark's boat had caught upwards of 20 redfish, and no snook. Mark had tried to contact us once he got on the school of reds, but we couldn't hear him. Tom and Russ took home 3 nice reds and 2 snook.
We've got some real good looking tides this week, and the weather may start to moderate a little. There's plenty of bait everywhere. If I was a betting man, I'd bet that fishing this coming week will be great!
